Laterapedagogy / Lateratherapy

Why does it help to identify the leading eye ?

If we consider the Western reading and writing system, which follows a left-to-right direction, we notice that right-handers read and write in an “opening direction”. The system is suited to their laterality. The two are in harmony.

Left-handed and left-eyed individuals read and write in a “closing direction”. The system is ill-suited to their laterality. The two are not in harmony.

That is because the reading and writing opening direction for left-handers is from right to left, as demonstrated by the astonishing “mirror writing” used spontaneously by children in their early learnings. Indeed, the graphic gesture followed by the leading eye moves towards the left, giving the upper body more space for a better flowing breath, a better back posture as well as a better holding of the writing tool (pen).

It is also essential to question these 2 assumptions according to which :

  • a right-hander is necessarily right-eyed too ;
  • a person who is right-eyed for static vision (often long-distance and vertical) is also right-eyed for dynamic vision (often up close and horizontal, for instance when reading and writing).
    A test of 450 people claiming to be right-handed and right-eyed revealed that 52% were actually left-eyed for dynamic vision !

Additionally, 3/4 of those 52% reported having reading difficulties, cognitive disorders or emotional disorders, or to suffer from headaches... (See list of symptoms on the home page.)

Following the application of the laterapedagogy / lateratherapy principals, they all reported noticing a reduction or even the disappearance of their disorders.

The method’s impacts on physical, cognitive, psychological and mental balance are tangible.

With the right-to-left writing system, such as Arabic and Hebrew, the same symptoms or disorders may appear.

They are treated following the same 4 areas of work :

  • a thorough diagnosis of your laterality, visual and dynamic in particular so as to identify your leading eye ;
  • depending on the diagnosis, tools and strategies to rehabilitate your original laterality (mainly manual and visual) ;

_ finally, adaptation tools and strategies to the left-to-right reading and writing system in the West and to the right-to-left system in the East ;
therapy support according to the impacts on your individuation process, your identity, self-esteem and self-confidence.

At the bottom of this page, you are invited to start testing your dominant and leading eye and to consider the impact the right-handed system has on our space-time representations.

Joëlle Morice Mugnier initially developed laterapedagogy / lateratherapy* as a way to overcome her own personal difficulties, and those of her patients.

1 – Laterapedagogy : a preventive method designed for left-eyed or left-handed children in their early learnings. It aims at structuring their laterality and helping them to adapt better to society’s thinking, reading and writing system, in the right-sided West.
Laterapedagogy includes reading and writing procedures, tools such as the arrow card for reading, the tracing-paper notebook and double-sided whiteboard ® or mirror whiteboard for writing. An “exercise book for writing with reading tips” was recently published at the start of the 2013-14 school year.

2 – Lateratherapy :
a therapy designed for those who are ill-lateralised, left-eyed or left-handed, experiencing difficulties, whose cognitive, conative, emotional and mental functions may be disturbed.

If you wish to see :
• a laterapedagogue (for a series of 4 to 10 or so sessions according to the severity of the symptoms), or
• a laterapractitioner (for a short therapy of 8 to 30 sessions according to the severity of the symptoms),
please contact "G2L" : Groupement des Latérapédagogues et Latérathérapeutes (Laterapedagogues and Lateratherapist Group) at joellemorice@wanadoo.fr.

Rates are region-dependent (between €50 and €65 for a one-hour session).

A laterapedagogue provides care in laterapedagogy. Prior to becoming certified**, they may have been a teacher, an assistant teacher or an education specialist.

A laterapractitioner provides care in laterapedagogy / lateratherapy. Prior to becoming certified**, they may have been a speech therapist, a grapho-therapist, an orthoptist, a psychometrist, a psychologist or a psycho-practitioner.
